Metropolitan State University encourages and appreciates graduate participation in various activities. Alumni can be proud to say Metropolitan State is an active community partner and it regularly proves this commitment in a variety of ways.
Library-Community Outreach The Library-Community Outreach program has several opportunities for alumni through the Library and Information Center which includes the Dayton's Bluff Branch of the St. Paul Public Library. The Zone Homework Help Center is recruiting tutors to assist students of all ages---mostly elementary and high school age---with reading, math, computer literacy, and other general homework concerns for one two-hour tutoring session each week. Days/Times: 3-7 p.m. Mon.-Thurs., and 1-4 p.m. Saturday. Other library-related programs include field trips, information literacy programs and family literacy programs. Contact the Community Engagement Coordinator, David Streier at 651-793-1296 or e-mail at david.streier@metrostate.edu for more information.
Read! Read! Read! The Read! Read! Read! program continues to recruit university students and alumni to be literacy tutors in inner city elementary schools and community sites. The program supports civic engagement and courses with service-learning requirements. Days and times are flexible; training and placements are provided. Tutors may participate in Cook 'n Book Family Nights, an evening outreach program promoting family cooking and literacy. At Dayton's Bluff Elementary, Cook 'n Book will be held on April 9 & 23. At Eastern Heights Elementary, Cook 'n Book will be held on April 10. In addition, the Running Start Program at Dayton's Bluff Elementary challenges first graders to read 21 books in 10 weeks, and we are recruiting Metropolitan State students, alumni, faculty and staff to serve as reading partners for the first-graders. Days and times are flexible; training is provided. The Read! Read! Read! Program is also looking for members of the Metropolitan State community to assist with fun, environment-related National Youth Service Day (April 24-25) at Dayton's Bluff Elementary. For more information about any of these programs, please contact Emily Gruis, K-8 Coordinator, at 651-793-1288 or via e-mail at emily.gruis@metrostate.edu.
College for Kids Teachers Needed! Assist in making college a reality for local elementary students by participating in College for Kids on the St. Paul campus! Fourth, fifth, and sixth graders have the chance to experience a college environment and dream about the future when they visit Metropolitan State. The elementary students arrive in the late morning, register for classes, attend two fun classes designed and taught by university students and faculty, and participate in a special graduation ceremony. Upcoming College for Kids dates are May 9, 16 and 23. We are seeking Metropolitan State University students, alumni, faculty and staff to design and teach a class on either of these event days. College for Kids is a great opportunity to fulfill community-based/service-learning requirements and explore interests in working with elementary students. If you are interested in participating in College for Kids or would like to learn more about the program, please contact Emily Gruis at 651-793-1288 or via e-mail at emily.gruis@metrostate.edu.
