This lecture and laboratory based course builds upon the concepts and skills the oral health care practitioner student learned in Community-Based Primary Oral Healthcare I. The course emphases are complex amalgam tooth preparations and restorations; pre-formed crown preparations and restorations; provisional restorations; preventive mouthguards; and pediatric restorative dentistry, atraumatic restorative dentistry, and pulpotomies in a simulation laboratory setting. Concepts and strategies include behavior management; treatment planning; prevention; restorative care; and space maintenance for pediatric and adolescent patients. Within the context of advance dental therapy practice indications for professional referral to provide comprehensive patient care are also a course focus.

D. Learning Outcomes (General)
  1. Demonstrate critical thinking skills and fine motor skills by appropriate evidence-based selection and application of direct restorative materials used in the primary dentition by oral health practitioners while in the laboratory setting.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of milestones in child behavior and development.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of primary tooth preparation and restoration related to DT/ADT scope of practice.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to develop and manage a comprehensive treatment plan for the pediatric and adolescent patient according to their individual needs within the context of a collaborative management agreement.
  5. Describe and evaluate basic assessment data for the pediatric and adolescent patient within the dental therapist/advanced dental therapist (DT/ADT) scope of practice.
  6. Explore appropriate preventive procedures for pediatric and adolescent patients according to their individual needs.
  7. Integrate appropriate considerations and behavior management techniques for managing pediatric and adolescent patients within the DT/ADT scope of practice.
  8. Integrate the principles and techniques of space maintenance in the simulation setting in regard to arch integrity into oral health practitioner scope of practice and develop the critical thinking and judgment for appropriate referrals.
