This course is the culmination and synthesis of the educational experiences of the oral health care practitioner student. Integration and application of independent critical thinking, problem solving skills, professional attitudes, sound clinical judgment, and primary and preventive oral health care skills are essential to advanced dental therapy practice success and will be demonstrated through laboratory (simulation) and clinical practical experiences. A final scholarly paper will focus on a topic relevant to advanced dental therapy practice demonstrating the writing and communication skills necessary for the MSOHCP degree.

D. Learning Outcomes (General)
  1. Consult with and refer to other professionals as indicated by patients┬┐ medical and/or dental problems.
  2. Demonstrate competence and independence in risk assessment, preventative therapies, and management strategies that are appropriate to age, developmental stage, culture, health history, ethnicity and available resources.
  3. Demonstrate competence in the clinical setting to independently provide dental therapy/advanced dental therapy primary oral health care services to underserved patients across the lifespan.
  4. Demonstrate critical thinking and written communication skills through a scholarly inquiry to a topic relating to advanced dental hygiene practice.
  5. Demonstrate responsibility for decisions made that affect the patient┬┐s health and welfare.
  6. Determine a prognosis and treatment plan with authorization by a collaborative management dentist that is patient problem-centered with.
  7. Develop and present an effective poster presentation based upon the scholarly paper topic.
  8. Develop and write an effective scholarly paper on a topic relevant to a Master of Science: in Advanced Dental Therapy.
  9. Gather and analyze data pertaining to oral health care problems.
  10. Participate in self-assessment and implement changes necessary to improve professional effectiveness.
  11. Prevent, identify, and manage medical and dental emergencies in the oral health care practice setting.
  12. Provide appropriate informed consent.
  13. Provide appropriate preventive and self-care strategies.
  14. Provide direct/indirect pulp capping in permanent or primary dentition.
  15. Provide non-surgical extractions for indicated primary or permanent teeth within the dental therapy/advanced dental therapy scope of practice.
  16. Provide pulpotomies in the primary dentition as indicated.
  17. Provide recementation of appropriate restorations as indicated.
  18. Provide restorative care utilizing appropriate direct dental materials.
  19. Provide temporary restorations as indicated.
  20. Provide, dispense, or administer pharmacologic agents for prevention, control of infection, and pain management utilizing established protocols or in consultation with a dentist or physician.
  21. Review and assess medical and dental history.
  22. Utilize pain management strategies effectively.
