This course provides a context and a baseline for knowledge about Minnesota African American communities. This course includes an overview of the past and present experiences, struggles, and issues and the intersections of the past and the present in Minnesota African American communities. Students will have an opportunity to complete a community-based project as part of the requirements for this course.

D. Learning Outcomes (General)
  1. Describe the history of African American communities in Minnesota and the political momentum and/or organizational strategies that emerged in tandem with National social movements.
  2. Examine the impact of social movements on the history, culture, political organization of African American Communities in Minnesota.
  3. Explain the historically significant movements and their impact on African American communities in Minnesota.
  4. Obtain a baseline knowledge of Minnesota African American communities and their history.
  5. Utilize hands-on knowledge (gain through a community-based class project) to further understand and explain the impact of American history has had on Minnesota African American communities.

  1. Demonstrate an awareness of the individual and institutional dynamics of unequal power relations between groups in contemporary society.
  2. Analyze their own attitudes, behaviors, concepts and beliefs regarding diversity, racism, and bigotry.
  3. Understand the development of and the changing meanings of group identities in the United States' history and culture.
  4. Describe and discuss the experience and contributions (political, social, economic, etc.) of the many groups that shape American society and culture, in particular those groups that have suffered discrimination and exclusion.
  5. Demonstrate communication skills necessary for living and working effectively in a society with great population diversity.
