This course provides pre-service Early Childhood and Elementary teachers with the theoretical foundations and practical skills necessary to become reflective professionals who can design and implement effective language arts instruction for economically, academically, culturally, racially and linguistically diverse children. The course emphasizes the social constructivist perspective of reading and writing development which includes the importance of the total learning environment - school, home and community.

D. Learning Outcomes (General)
  1. Analyze relevant theories of reading, writing, and effective instruction.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of major approaches to teaching reading and writing at different stages and phases of students¿ literacy development.
  3. Teach in ways to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.
  4. Show knowledge of recent theory and research on reading and writing processes.
  5. Demonstrate ability to use technology in their classrooms to promote literacy development.
  6. Explore children¿s books and ways that children¿s literature can support literacy development.
