This course takes a critical and historical approach to literature in English by women, looking at the emergence of female literary voices and exploring the contexts in which their works were written. Some sections of the course may focus on particular traditions within the range of literature written by women.

  1. Articulate substantial and clearly presented responses to literature written by women ¿ at a level consistent with the analytical and expressive complexity and sophistication that are distinctly characteristic of upper-division courses at comprehensive universities. ¿ Conduct literary analysis that is responsive to details and to complexities of text and theme in literature written by women ¿ at a level consistent with the analytical and expressive complexity and sophistication that are distinctly characteristic of upper-division courses at comprehensive universities.
  2. Comprehend the influences gender exerts within literature written by women, most notably issues of domesticity, women¿s education, marriage, race, class, sexuality, reproduction, and the body ¿ at a level consistent with the analytical and expressive complexity and sophistication that are distinctly characteristic of upper-division courses at comprehensive universities.
  3. Demonstrate familiarity with subgenres of literature written by women, and understand the development and characteristics of these subgenres ¿ at a level consistent with the analytical and expressive complexity and sophistication that are distinctly characteristic of upper-division courses at comprehensive universities.
