The Ethnic and Religious Studies Department offers a B.A. in Ethnic Studies and two distinct minors: one in Ethnic Studies and another in Religious Studies.
Ethnic Studies by definition is a study of people of color and their experience in all dimensions of life, be they social, political, economic, cultural, spiritual, educational, etc. As such, it is interdisciplinary. The Religious Studies program offers a curriculum on world religious traditions including those of recent immigrants to the United States and spiritual traditions of the indigenous people in the United States. It is a critical and analytical field of study of people?s values and spirituality from various cultures, racial and ethnic backgrounds.
The department is committed to the mission of the university and its potential valuable services to students and communities of color. The department?s vision is to create curriculum that understands race and ethnicity in the United States and globally, engaging in the interdisciplinary, comparative, and integrative studies of the four major racial groups, i.e. African Americans, American Indians, Asian Americans and Chicano/Latino Americans as well as connecting with their relevant communities. The study of religion has, from the beginning of human civilization, been a significant part of the intellectual world and a central force in shaping diverse cultures. Modern civilization and communities of color are, and continue to be shaped and informed by religious minds.
