  Black, Nancy
Professor

Professor Nancy Johnson Black, Chair of the Social Science Department at Metropolitan State University since 1994, has conducted anthropological research primarily in Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico beginning in 1977, largely funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Geographic Society, the MacArthur Foundation and Sigma Xi. She earned her undergraduate baccalaureate degree in anthropology with highest honors from the Pennsylvania State University and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Her MA and PhD in anthropology are from the State University of New York at Albany. The results of her research have been published as books and numerous articles by the Smithsonian Institution, the University of California at Los Angeles Press, Prisma Press of the University of Minnesota, Westview Press, Waveland Press, Yale University Press, and E.J. Brill of the Netherlands. From 1993 to 1999, Professor Black was recognized five times for her excellence in teaching. She received Metropolitan State University s Excellence in Teaching Award in 1993 and the Outstanding Teacher Award in 1995. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching named Dr. Black 1998 Minnesota Professor the Year, and the St. Paul Rotary Club awarded her the Educator of the Year in 1998 as well. In 1999 she received the Educator Award from the Women s Commission at Metropolitan State University for rigor in her research and maintaining sensitivity to women*s issues in her teaching. She was selected as a Kellogg Fellow in the Kellogg/Minnesota State College and University Leadership Institute for 2000-2001, and served as Scholar-in Resident at the Minnesota Humanities Commission Summer Teacher Institute in 1999 and 2002. Her research interests in human rights, gender, globalization and Latin America are reflected in her teaching.

  Byrne, James
Associate Professor

As an associate professor at Metropolitan State University, James Byrne teaches screenwriting and digital film production and is the coordinator of the screenwriting program. Byrne has an M.F.A. from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in video art. He did additional graduate study at the Whitney Museum independent study program and also studied at Playwrights Horizons Theature School. He earned a B.E.S. from University of Minnesota in interdisciplinary studes in studio art and philosophy. Byren's debut feature film, Great Lakes, which he wrote and directed, premiered at the 2002 Telluride IndieFest. Great Lakes won beest director, best screenplaya dn best lead actress at the 2003 Smmash Film Festival in Minneapolis. His second feature film, Ninety Nine Pages, premiered as an official selection at the 2005 Ellensburge Film Festival. His recent screenplay, The Forgetting Man, was a top ten semi-finaist in the 2005 Monterey Screenplay Competition. Under the Sink, his feature length screenplay, won the 1998 McKnight Artists Fellowship for Screenwriters, as well as the 1998 Morrow Screenwriting Fellowship. His screenplay, Great Lakes, received the Minnesota Independent Film Fund Award. Byrne's screenplays and videos have been recognized with grants and fellowships from the Bush Foundation, Jerome Foundation, McKnight Foundation, Minnesota State Arts Board, New York State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
