Bonnie Luke Memorial Garden
Bonnie Luke was an advisor and teacher at Metropolitan State University. She died in February 1994 after a long battle with cancer. She is survived by one son and daughter.
Students, faculty and staff have tried to find special ways to honor her memory.
In 1996, a community garden was planted next to the Swede Hollow Cafe on East 7th Street in St. Paul, in cooperation with Carol Carey from the Upper Swede Hollow Neighborhoods Association and local businesses including 3M, Bachman's, Bailey's, Linder's Greenhouse and Minnesota Green. Irises and other plants from Bonnie Luke's garden were planted.
The Metropolitan State University Women's Commission and the Advising Center commissioned a memorial plaque mounted on a large stone.
The garden has had work and contributions from the Metropolitan State community, Dayton's Bluff School and neighborhood residents. Today it is tended by the Metropolitan State Women's Commission and friends.
Bonnie Luke Scholarship Fund has been established in Bonnie's name, with its funds distributed to mothers with school-age children who want to make a better life for themselves and their families. The Metropolitan State Foundation holds the funds. The Scholarship Committee members are Donna Blacker and Jeff Levy.
Join us for garden tending at the Bonnie Luke Memorial Garden, spring through fall.
