The Silent Witness Project ExhibitionThe Silent Witness Project was started in 1990 in Minnesota by a group of teachers, writers, and artists calling themselves Arts Action Against Domestic Violence (AAADV). To increase awareness of domestic violence in a way that would not be easily forgotten, they created nearly life-sized silhouettes of women. 26 of these figures represent specific women murdered in 1990, and each includes a plaque that describes the woman's life and her murder by her abuser. An additional figure, the 27th, bears a plaque that says only "The Uncounted Woman 1990" and represents the unknown and unnamed women who die in domestic violence.
By July 1997, groups in all 50 states had pledged to join in the Silent Witness Initiative. In October 1997, these groups held the March to End the Silence in Washington, D.C. The marchers brought over 1,500 Silent Witness figures. From every state, there was one figure for the unknown woman.
The primary goal of the Silent Witness Initiative is to end domestic violence in our lifetimes.
