About the Program

The Early Childhood Studies Major is housed in Metropolitan State University's Psychology Department, College of Professional Studies. The major is designed primarily for students seeking baccalaureate degrees in early childhood studies. Many students will be seeking career enhancements in the child development field, or may wish to pursue graduate studies in child development. However, courses in the major are open to all students interested in studying the development of young children.

Students completing a Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.S.) with a major in Early Childhood Studies will develop knowledge and skills related to:

  • child development and learning;
  • early childhood curriculum development and implementation;
  • family and community relationships;
  • assessment and evaluation of young children;
  • professionalism and ethical issues in early childhood; and
  • application of knowledge and skills within the context of an urban early childhood setting.

Students transferring from MnSCU technical and community colleges may enter the Early Childhood Studies program with a diploma or A.A.S. degree in child development.
