Degrees (Licensure Programs)
The following degrees and licensure programs are offered to students committed to teaching in an urban setting who meet program admission criteria:
Urban Early Childhood Education B.S. (Birth-Grade 3 Licensure) [fact sheet] Designed for students seeking to work with young children in urban early childhood programs or K-3 school settings. This program of study incorporates a multicultural approach and experiential learning in community settings.
Urban Elementary Education B.S. (PreKindergarten-Grade 6 Licensure*) [fact sheet] This program of study incorporates a multicultural approach and experiential learning in urban preschool and urban elementary school settings. (*this licensure program is still pending approval from MN Board of Teaching)
English Teaching Major B.S. (Communication Arts and Literature Teaching Licensure Grades 5-12) [fact sheet] Future urban teachers of communication arts and literature study American literature, public speaking, communications, creative writing, and literature for adolescents in multicultural learning environments.
Life Sciences Teaching Major B.S. (Life Science Teaching Licensure Grades 5-12) [fact sheet] The program prepares urban teachers of life science, environmental science and biology for grades 9-12 and life, earth and physical science for grades 5-8.
Mathematics Teaching Major B.S. (Mathematics Teaching Licensure Grades 5-12) [fact sheet] Study is focused on providing prospective urban teachers with problem-solving knowledge in calculus, discrete mathematics, linear algebra, geometry, and mathematical modeling.
Social Studies Teaching Major B.S. (Social Science Teaching Licensure, Grades 5-12) [fact sheet] Program requirements for urban teacher candidates include U.S. and world history, American government, geography, economics, gender and ethnic studies.
Post-Baccalaureate Process for Grades 5-12 Licensure/Graduate Certificate The Urban Teacher Program has a licensure process for those who have a degree and want to gain initial licensure or for those who have both a degree and license and want to either expand or add a license. Graduate level courses in urban education are offered toward licensure and can lead to a Graduate Certificate in Urban Secondary Teacher Preparation in any of four secondary education subject areas listed above.
New Programs The UTP expects to develop and offer ESL (K-12) and Special Education (K-12) licensure programs by the year 2010.
