Community Users

About

Community users are library patrons who are not currently students, staff or faculty at Metropolitan State University.

Privileges

As a non-student user of this facility, you are able to take advantage of many of the services that we offer. These include use of:

  • Public study tables and seating.
  • Checkout of books and audiovisual items.
  • Reference and research assistance.
  • Computer workstations -- after you sign up for an account.
  • Printing, faxing, and photocopying for a fee.
  • Study rooms on an "as available" basis.
  • Library materials for use in the library or for checkout.
Checking Out Books and Videos

In order to take full advantage of the resources and services of the Metropolitan State University Library and Learning Center, a community user must first obtain a Community Borrowers? Card at the second floor ID card desk during normal hours of operation for Metropolitan State University. You will need to show a driver's license or other official photo identification. You will also need a Saint Paul Public Library card, a card from another MELSA public library, or a current ID card from a Minnesota College or University.

Metropolitan State will issue community borrower cards to any registered borrower in good standing with Saint Paul Public Library (or another MELSA public library) who is 13 years of age or older. Please present a driver's license or photo ID from your school. Application forms for persons under age 18 must be signed by a parent or legal guardian in the presence of Metropolitan State University library staff. Cards will be good for two years. Once you have your Metropolitan State card you can begin to check out materials immediately.

Using Computer Workstations

In order to use a computer workstation, you must activate your card via the kiosk on the first floor. This must be done each day that you want to use a computer workstation.

In order to print from a computer, you must first place funds in your university account. This can be done at the Help Desk on the first floor. Printing costs 10 cents per page (a minimum of $1.00 will be accepted). Funds placed in this account do not expire at the end of the day. They remain available for future logins. There are no refunds for funds placed on cards even if card is lost or stolen.

We request that community borrowers limit their use of university computers to two hours per day. If there are more people seeking computers to use than there are computers available, priority will be given to currently-enrolled university students.
