Insurance Eligibility

Faculty members, who are employed on the basis of at least 50% of a full-time work assignment (24 credits) may participate in the group insurance program including health, dental, life and disability coverage.

  • Eligible for Full Employer Contribution Toward Insurance:      Faculty members appointed for at least 75% of a full-time load are eligible for the full employer contribution toward the cost of single coverage and pay a portion of the premium for dependent coverage
  • Eligible for Partial Employer Contribution Toward Insurance:  Faculty employed for at least 50% time but less than 75% time for 9 months or more are eligible for a partial employer contribution equal to 75 percent of the full employer contribution toward health, dental and basic life insurance.

Retirement:

If the initial appointment is at least 25% of full-time, there is mandatory participation (if under age 65) in the Defined Contribution Retirement Plan (IRAP) or in the Teachers Retirement Association (TRA) defined benefit plan on a pre-tax basis. The faculty member contributes 4.5% of gross salary and Metropolitan State University contributes 6% to the IRAP plan. For the TRA plan, the faculty member contributes 5.5% and Metropolitan State University contributes 5.5%.

Following completion of two years of full-time service, faculty members participate in supplemental retirement by contributing an additional $2,250 each year which is matched by Metropolitan State University.

 

Other Pre-tax Benefits


Employees seeking other tax advantaged vehicles have the option to participate in either a 403(b) tax sheltered annuity program and/or in a 457 deferred compensation program. Paid Leaves

  • Sick leave- Full-time faculty members earn one day of sick leave for each month of employment. New faculty members are credited with a sick leave advance. 
  • Sabbatical leave- The President/designee may grant a sabbatical leave to an eligible faculty member who proposes to undertake a scholarly research project, additional study, or other endeavor related to the purpose described above.

Professional Development

Funds for Professional Study/Travel are available to faculty each year and faculty may apply for Professional Development Grants.

 

Tuition Waiver/Reimbursement

Full-time faculty members and part-time probationary and tenured part-time and community faculty members are entitled to enrollment in courses at any university in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) system without payment of tuition. Depending on faculty status, the total tuition waived may be for as much as twenty seven (27) credits for a fiscal year.
