read 01The Literacy Corps is an initiative with a goal to have every child reading independently by the third grade.  Metropolitan State supports this effort by integrating tutors into inner-city sites, including elementary schools and libraries, where they work directly with children facing significant language and literacy challenges.  This tutoring partnership is vital component of each school’s literacy efforts.

Reinforcement reading tutors work one-on-one with elementary students.  The tutor and the child practice reading and engage in a number of activities designed to develop literacy skills.  Primary focus is on K-3 while other grade levels are included as deemed necessary.

Read with Me tutors provide after-school literacy tutoring to children at the Dayton’s Bluff Branch of the St. Paul Public Library during library hours.

Extended day participants meet with children before and after school in small groups where they may choose to read a book together and explore the story through a guided discussion, play literacy-based games, or collaborate on writing a story of their own.  Primary focus is on   K-3 with other grade levels included as deemed necessary.

Homework helpers meet with students in the extended day programs to encourage learning success by helping elementary students with their homework challenges.

Cook and Book Family Nights focus on family literacy.  Each session a different book is read by the group followed by a brief discussion of the story.  A literacy activity related to the theme of the book provides an opportunity for parents and children to share the fun of story-time.  A family cooking classes precedes each session and integrates literacy through reading and writing recipes, measuring ingredients, and sharing mealtime stories. For more information on how to become a tutor, call the Literacy Corps and Youth Outreach Work Study Coordinator at 651-793-1296.
