Law Enforcement Licensing Certificate
The Law Enforcement Licensing Certificate is designed to prepare individuals who have already completed a bachelor's degree (or higher) in any discipline from an accredited college/university for entry into the law enforcement profession in Minnesota. The certificate program meets all Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) learning objectives (www.dps.state.mn.us/newpost/PDFs/LearningObjectives.pdf). Students must meet POST minimum selection standards (www.dps.state.mn.us/newpost/posthome.asp) and complete the following course work.
Prerequisites (6 credits)
- CJS 101 Introduction to Criminal Justice
- CJS 302 Juvenile Justice (must be completed at Minnesota POST-certified college or university)
Core Courses (30 credits)
- LAWE 220 Legal Issues in Law Enforcement
- LAWE 230 Patrol Operations
- LAWE 240 Minnesota Criminal and Traffic Codes
- LAWE 325 Criminal Procedure and Investigation
- LAWE 330 Critical Issues in Law Enforcement
- LAWE 370 Assisting Families in Crisis
- Law Enforcement skills (registration by permission only)
Required for POST sign-off (4 credits)
- LAWE 104 First Responder for Law Enforcement (required for POST exam).
