Law Enforcement Licensing Certificate

The Law Enforcement Licensing Certificate is designed to prepare individuals who have already completed a bachelor's degree (or higher) in any discipline from an accredited college/university for entry into the law enforcement profession in Minnesota. The certificate program meets all Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) learning objectives (www.dps.state.mn.us/newpost/PDFs/LearningObjectives.pdf). Students must meet POST minimum selection standards (www.dps.state.mn.us/newpost/posthome.asp) and complete the following course work.

Prerequisites (6 credits)

• CJS 101 Introduction to Criminal Justice
• CJS 302 Juvenile Justice (must be completed at Minnesota POST-certified college or university)

Core Courses (30 credits)

• LAWE 220 Legal Issues in Law Enforcement
• LAWE 230 Patrol Operations
• LAWE 240 Minnesota Criminal and Traffic Codes
• LAWE 325 Criminal Procedure and Investigation
• LAWE 330 Critical Issues in Law Enforcement
• LAWE 370 Assisting Families in Crisis
• Law Enforcement skills (registration by permission only)
  

Required for POST sign-off (4 credits)

• LAWE 104 First Responder for Law Enforcement (required for POST exam).
