Thank you for your interest in the programs offered by the dental hygiene department at Metropolitan State University. We welcome your exploration of our innovative programs and courses uniquely designed to prepare professionals to address oral health care needs.

The Master of Science in Advanced Dental Therapy program at Metropolitan State University, College of Health, Community and Professional Studies, the first program of its kind in the nation, prepares baccalaureate prepared dental hygienists for the new dental provider roles of dental therapist and advanced dental therapist as established by Minnesota statute [150A.01]. This nationally groundbreaking program expands the dental team and focuses on improving access to these essential services. We are very proud to have received initial program approval from the Minnesota Board of Dentistry for both the dental therapist and advanced dental therapist aspects of our integrated curriculum.

The first pioneering group of students recently completed their educational journey. These graduates, after successfully passing an examination, become dually licensed dental hygienists and dental therapists. They provide preventive and restorative care in collaboration with licensed dentists. Their work is expected to make it easier and more affordable for underserved populations, including children, the elderly and working poor, to obtain high-quality oral health care.

Our Bachelor of Science program in dental hygiene (BSDH) is designed for associate degree dental hygienists. This unique program, offered in partnership with Normandale Community College, prepares you for new opportunities in either dental practice or non-traditional settings such as public health programs, school based programs, or research, development, marketing or sales roles. A post baccalaureate certificate program is available for baccalaureate prepared dental hygeniests. The BSDH and the post baccalaureate certificate in dental hygiene also meet the prerequisite requirements and prepare individuals to pursue the Master of Science in Advanced Dental Therapy.

The faculty, advisors and staff are committed to providing expert clinical education, academic advice and to support students prepare to serve the oral health needs of our community. Please explore our website to learn more about these exciting programs and the opportunities here for you. We look forward to hearing from you!
