This program provides associate degree dental hygienists from accredited institutions an opportunity to complete a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene (BSDH). The design of this program is based on recent Minnesota legislation called "Limited Authorization of Dental Hygienists" commonly referred to as "Collaborative Agreements." This legislation allows a dental hygienist to practice in alternative settings once a formal agreement between a dentist and dental hygienist is established. One goal of this program is to graduate students who are community-minded oral health care providers. Three of the courses included in this degree completion program are required for admission into the Masters of Science: Oral Health Care Practitioner.

Why pursue a bachelor's degree as a dental hygienist?

The increasingly complex health and oral care environment creates opportunities and challenges for dental practice and the delivery of oral health care. The following issues contribute to a great need for baccalaureate prepared dental hygienists:

  • Emerging best practice evidence
  • Changing disease and practice patterns
  • An aging population
  • Increasing diversity of our communities
  • A more informed and health conscious public

Our innovative baccalaureate completion program prepares individuals for positions of responsibility in dental hygiene, including opportunities in clinical practice, education, management, public/community health, development and sales.

Who should seek a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene?

  • Dental hygienists seeking to expand their clinical practice to include restorative functions
  • Dental hygienists seeking leadership positions
  • Dental hygienists interested in pursuing a master's degree in dental hygiene, education, or in the new and exciting clinical role of advanced dental therapist
