Entrepreneurship Courses

 

The Center for Women Entrepreneurs and Entrepreneurship Education has introduced the following entrepreneurship courses at the College of Management: Entrepreneurship in Practice, Entrepreneurship and Marketing, Entrepreneurship and Law, and Entrepreneurship and Technology. Some of these courses may be taken as major electives by undergraduate students in business administration, marketing, and management programs (please see the course descriptions below for details).

The courses are also available to existing and aspiring business owners who are not students at Metropolitan State University through open enrollment. Non-admitted students may register either in person at the registration desk in Saint Paul or Minneapolis campus, or by e-mailing their name, date of birth, phone number, address, e-mail, and social security number to registration@lists.metrostate.edu. Please note that open registration begins later than normal registration windows. Check registration timetable for open registration dates.

Entrepreneurship in Practice (MGMT 492) - 4 credits

The course is designed for students who wonder if they have the personal temperament and professional background needed to start a business. The course combines theory with practice to offer students the opportunity to understand the dynamics of being a business owner. By the end of the term each student will have developed an individual entrepreneurship strategy and prepared a business feasibility plan. Team-taught by two successful business owners. This course was developed in conjunction with George Washington University.

Prerequisites: MKTG 300 Marketing Principles and ACCT 210 Accounting, or instructor's permission. Students must have writing skills at the intermediate level or higher.

Entrepreneurship and Marketing (MGMT 494) - 4 credits

This new course focuses on the unique marketing challenges faced by startup businesses and emerging businesses .Through case studies, active participation and guest speakers, students will learn to possess the skills of planning, creativity and innovation to counter large budgets, experience and reputation. The course is based upon an identified opportunity and addresses strategic planning, marketing research and guerrilla marketing tactics.

Prerequisites: are MKTG 300 Marketing Principles.

Entrepreneurship and Law (MGMT 486) -4 credits

The course covers all the basic legal and human resource issues that entrepreneurs encounter in developing, growing, and exiting a business. Sample topics include the choice of entity, financing issues, contracts, employment, intellectual property, potential areas of liability, and methods of sale of the business.

Prerequisites: ACCT 210 Financial Accounting and MKTG 300 Marketing Principles, or instructor's permission. Writing skills at intermediate level or higher.

This course is appropriate for students at junior level or above who have an existing business or are interested in running their own business. Business elective for Business Administration and Management majors. 

Entrepreneurship and Technology - 4 credits
Coming fall 2006.
