Program Approval
The Doctor of Nursing Practice program has been approved by Metropolitan State University and by Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU). The Higher Learning Commission must also extend its approval before students can be fully admitted or the program can begin. Metropolitan State University expects a decision from the Higher Learning Commission sometime in late 2011. All information is subject to change without notice.
Application Deadline
Annual application deadline for admission into the DNP program with a fall semester start is January 15. If the date falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline will be the following business day. This year's application deadline has been extended to January 31, 2012.

To be considered for full admission to the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program, you must submit:
- Application
- The Metropolitan State Graduate Programs Application includes optional Request for Confidential Information.
- Non-refundable Application Fee
- Current doctoral fee of $40 is waived for graduates of Metropolitan State.
- Official Transcripts
- Official transcripts for all post-secondary institutions attended.
- Transcripts showing BS/BA and MS (post-master's applicants only) degrees in nursing must be from a regionally accredited institution, also accredited by either the National League for Nursing (NLN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
- Applicants must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA for all previous post-secondary study and degrees, including any courses completed that did not directly lead to a completed degree.
- Current Unencumbered License
- Evidence of current unencumbered RN licensure in one state with eligibility for licensure in Minnesota.
- Application Essay
Directions: In a typed, double-spaced essay of approximately 1500 words please address the following topics.
Describe how you envision the role and scope of the DNP-prepared Family Nurse Practitioner.
Describe your future practice (including the population with whom you foresee yourself working) and explain how this practice will contribute to the goals of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences as noted in the mission: to advance professional nursing and to enhance the health of under-served and diverse populations.
Describe and explain life, work or academic skills, knowledge and/or experience you currently possess that contribute toward the two goals stated above. Also describe how these factors will contribute to your success in this graduate program and in the development of your advanced practice nursing role.
- Three References
- Completed reference forms from three people including the following:
- a former faculty member
- a supervisor/employer
- a professional peer or colleague
- If a reference can no longer be obtained from a faculty member, a second supervisor/employer reference may be substituted.
- Completed reference forms from three people including the following:
- Computer Proficiency
- Completed computer proficiency form with student signature acknowledges awareness of computer proficiency expectations established by the Department of Nursing.
