Who Must Take This Assessment?

Applicants to the Master of Science in Criminal Justice program who have a cumulative GPA of 2.99 or less on the transcript from their bachelor degree-granting institution are required to take this assessment for inclusion in their application file.

Applicants, who have already taken the GRE and have minimum scores of 450V, 550Q, and 4W, can send an official copy of the GRE score in lieu of this assessment.

About The Assessment

Questions are divided into four areas from which the applicant selects the area that best fits their professional affiliation. Applicants must respond to all three questions in the selected area. For each question the applicant must write an approximately 1½ to 2 page essay in response. This assessment requires the use of a computer. The time limit is two hours. Applicants are evaluated on the clarity of their thoughts and ability to write effectively.

Scheduling Your Assessment

The assessment should be scheduled as soon as possible following submission of application materials. The assessment must be completed before the priority application deadline of March 2, 2012 to be given full consideration in the selection process.

Please see the schedule for specific times and make an appointment by sending an email to testing.center@metrostate.edu or by calling 651-793-1460. Appointments must be made at least one day in advance, however, availability is limited and early scheduling is recommended.

Tips for scheduling:

  • The Midway location is a fixed location and is computer equipped-1st choice.
  • The St. Paul location (equipped with computers) is a rotating location-2nd choice.
  • The Minneapolis location is not equipped with computers, therefore-not an option.
  • The first two months of any given semester are ideal for testing, with the last month of any given semester least ideal due to final exams being given (see the Academic Calendar for specific dates.)
  • All Testing Center locations are closed during school breaks.

You are required to fill out and bring with you, an Assessment Request Form.

Requests for special accommodations should be directed to Disability Services at 651-793-1540 or 793-1539 (voice) or 772-7687 (TDD). Accommodation requests must be submitted at least one week prior to the intended assessment date.

To request accommodations for special needs other than disabilities, call Diagnostic Services at 651-793-1537 or email baorong.li@metrostate.edu. Accommodation requests must be submitted at least one week prior to the intended assessment date.

After The Assessment Exam

For those that must take the assessment, your completed assessment will be forwarded to the Graduate Studies Office for inclusion in your application file. The assessment will be graded by a member of the admissions committee and then evaluated in conjunction with all other application materials in your file.
