After careful consideration, Metropolitan State University School of Nursing has elected to suspend admission to the MSN program for both the Nurse Educator and Leadership/Management Program for admission for fall 2015 and 2016 semesters. This suspension includes the post-masterís certificate options. We remain committed to our students currently enrolled. Please check back for future updates regarding these programs.

Application Deadline

Annual application deadline for admission into the MSN program with a fall semester start is January 31.

To be considered for full admission to the Master of Science in Nursing Program, you must submit:

  • Application
  • Non-refundable application fee
    • Current fee of $20 is waived for graduates of Metropolitan State.
  • Official transcripts
    • Official transcripts indicating BS/BA degree in nursing from a regionally accredited institution and a nursing program accreditation by the National League for Nursing (NLN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) completed at the time of application or a current, official transcript and documentation indicating that the student has no more than 16 outstanding semester credits at the time of the application. Such students must provide evidence of degree completion with a 3.0 GPA by June 15 of the application year.
  • Current unencumbered license
    • Evidence of current unencumbered RN licensure in at least one state with eligibility for licensure in Minnesota.
  • Application essay
    • A narrative of 750-1,000 words, word processed, with your name on the top of each page, the pages numbered and stapled together.
      • Describe the role of advanced nursing practice in nursing leadership or nursing education that you envision for yourself after completing this graduate program.
      • Explain how this advanced nursing practice will contribute to two of the goals of the School of Nursing mission: to advance professional nursing and to enhance the health of underserved and diverse populations.
      • Describe and explain life, work or academic skills, knowledge and/or experience you currently possess that contribute toward the two goals stated above and how they can be applied to future advanced nursing practice as a nurse leader or a nurse educator.

    Applicants are expected to use their own words and ideas when responding to essay questions. To clarify or strengthen a point, applicants may choose to include the thoughts and ideas of others when responding. In these cases, applicants are required to provide proper 6th edition APA citation of the works in which the ideas originated. Applicant essays are subject to plagiarism review, including the use of plagiarism detecting software. The consequences for essay plagiarism will be decided by the SON Admission/Retention Committee and could result in various consequences, including the full denial of an application.

    Applicants are encouraged to review language regarding plagiarism found in the Student Handbook.

  • Two references
    • Completed reference forms from two people. Select two people from two different categories listed below:
      • a faculty member
      • a supervisor/employer
      • a professional peer or colleague
  • Computer proficiency
    • Completed computer proficiency form with student signature acknowledges awareness of computer proficiency expectations established by the School of Nursing.
