Q. Will I have to complete general education requirements?

Applicants who have earned an Associate of Arts (AA) degree or completed the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum will have completed all general education requirements. Those with an Associate of Science (AS) or Associate of Applied Science (AAS) may have additional general education coursework to complete.
Q. How do I know which of my transfer courses replace courses in my major?
A. This information is reviewed in detail at the School of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Premajor Advising Workshop (PAW). The PAW is designed to serve criminal justice and law enforcement students after admission to the University. Students must register to attend a PAW by calling 763-657-3764.
Q. How many courses do I have left to take?
A. The PAW provides each student with detailed information regarding remaining requirements in their individual program.
Q. I want to register for this semester but have not attended a Premajor Advising Workshop (PAW). What should I register for?
A. Make certain that you have read as much information about the degree requirements as possible. Reading the Law Enforcement and/or Criminal Justice Fact Sheet and relevant sections in the Undergraduate Catalog are important steps in understanding these requirements. The SLC Advising Center also offers the following registration tips:
- Start with CJS 101 Introduction to Criminal Justice -- if you have not yet completed it.
- If you have completed CJS 101 and one college level writing course, register for CJS 200 Literature in Criminal Justice.
- Do not register for a class with the same or similar title as one you have already completed without talking to an academic advisor.
Q. How do I register for a course?
A. The last few pages of the Class Schedule provide detailed information regarding the various methods of registration.
Q. What can an academic advisor help me with?
A. Academic advisors provide a wide range of support services to students. Advisors can give guidance on general education and liberal studies, sequencing and prerequisites for major courses and overall degree program requirements. Advisors also help students choose elective courses and review strategies to become involved in the fields of law enforcement and criminal justice.
Q. What is the difference between the Law Enforcement & Criminal Justice majors?
A. Law enforcement is for those interested in becoming licensed peace officers in the State of Minnesota. It may also be a good choice for currently licensed peace officers who wish to complete a bachelor's degree.
Criminal Justice is for those interested in a broad range of careers in the criminal justice system including juvenile justice, parole, probation, law enforcement, courts and corrections.
CJS 101 Introduction to Criminal Justice and CJS 110 Careers in Criminal Justice provide students with a good overview of the system and may help students make decisions about their educational goals.
As students take criminal justice and law enforcement courses, they will also have the opportunity to interact with instructors and other students to gain additional insight into these areas.
Q. Can I double major in Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice?
A. Yes. This option is reviewed in detail at the PAW.
