Secondary Majors for Grades 5-12 Licensure

The Urban Teacher Program's (UTP) approach to teacher education focuses on preparing diverse, reflective and resilient teachers who are outstanding in their commitment to teaching urban youth and providing equal educational opportunity.

In addition to required education courses for licensure, teacher candidates must complete required course work in the specific content area they will be licensed to teach. See information within the College of Arts and Sciences that represent the teacher candidates' majors and bachelor's degrees:

  • English Teaching Major B.S. (Communication Arts and Literature Teaching Licensure Grades 5-12) [fact sheet]
    Future urban teachers of communication, arts, and literature study American literature, public speaking, communication, creative writing, and literature for adolescents in multicultural learning environments.
  • Life Sciences Teaching Major B.S. (Life Science Teaching Licensure Grades 5-12) [fact sheet]
    The program prepares urban teachers of life science, environmental science and biology for grades 9-12 and life, earth and physical science for grades 5-8.
  • Mathematics Teaching Major B.S. (Mathematics Teaching Licensure Grades 5-12) [fact sheet]
    Study is focused on providing prospective urban teachers with problem-solving knowledge in calculus, discrete mathematics, linear algebra, geometry, and mathematical modeling.
  • Social Studies Teaching Major B.S. (Social Science Teaching Licensure, Grades 5-12)[fact sheet]
    Program requirements for urban teacher candidates include U.S. and world history, American government, geography, economics, gender and ethnic studies.

Urban Secondary Education Licensure Program is a part of the Education Department Urban Teacher Program (UTP) in the College of Professional Studies and is offered as a major.
