With grassroots activism growing in our world there is a need for those with the ability to organize, develop, and sustain community, institutional, and social change.
This minor offered by First College allows students to:
• Have field experience in community organizing and
development.
• Explore the approaches of community empowerment and
social justice.
• Understand the impact of public policy on low-income
populations and people of color.
This minor studies the historical and current day forces and strategies that shape the field of community organizing and development. Students will explore multiple movements and focus on the practices used not only in the United States but around the world.
What You Need to Earn the Minor
In order to be admitted to the minor students must meet with the minor advisor and complete the minor declaration form. The advisor will provide the student orientation and consultation throughout their journey through the program.
19 credits are needed to earn the minor with a 4 credit elective course selected in consultation with the minor advisor.

• ETHS 309 The Color of Public Policy
• SOC 311 Community Organizing and Social Action
• POLS 343 Perspectives on Community Development
• SSCI 350I Social Science Internship
• SSCI 010 Social Science Internship Group Meetings
