The Pathways Program helps current students explore career options within the insurance and financial services (IFS) industry and teaches them the skills they need to successfully secure a job within their chosen field.

The program guides participants through a variety of online career development modules that cover topics such as conducting career research, interviewing, resume writing, networking, and professionalism. The program also provides opportunities to network with employers through field trips to IFS companies, employer panels, and information sessions.  

Who Can Participate?

Current students from the following majors can participate in the Pathways Program:

  • College of Management all majors
  • Department of Information & Computer Sciences all majors
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Professional Communication
  • Technical Communication and Professional Writing
  • Individualized Studies focus in any of the majors listed above 

Benefits of the Program

Students will gain:

  • Increased awareness of career options in the IFS industry

  • A clear plan for how to find a career in their field of study

Program Steps

Step 1: Schedule an Appointment

Make an appointment with a Pathways Program counselor by calling the Career Development Center - 651.793.1528.


Step 2: Complete the Pathways Program D2L Course, Attend Open Lab Sessions, and Attend Employer Events

The online D2L course is free and not for credit. Attend as many Open Lab Sessions as you like. Program counselors will be available to answer questions and help you meet your goals. Information about employer events is communicated to participants throughout the year.


Step 3: Schedule a Final Appointment

Meet one last time with a program counselor to finalize the program, receive a $50 bookstore gift card, and a certificate of completion.


Work at Your Own Pace

Students can remain in the Pathways Program until they graduate. The program can be completed in one semester but it is recommended for students to be involved for multiple semesters to give themselves enough time to fully prepare for their job search. Field trips and other employer events are only available to active participants so join early to maximize your exposure to potential employers.

The IFS industry helps customers minimize risk, prevent loss, and prepare for possible financial catastrophes. It is a large industry that encompasses a broad range of organizations including insurance companies, banks, credit unions, accountancy companies, consumer finance companies, investment funds, etc. Companies within this industry provide services and support for individuals and businesses which gives them the confidence they need to feel secure. There are many career opportunities within this industry.
