About the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE)

The Center for Academic Excellence is a learning and student-support department at Metropolitan State University devoted to cultivating student success and helping students achieve their academic goals. The Center also works collaboratively with faculty across disciplines to address student needs.

The Center for Academic Excellence is comprised of four centers: math, writing, science, and testing. The Math Center, Writing Center, and Science Center provides tutoring services for Metropolitan State University students. The Testing Center offers independent study and make-up exams.

Faculty and Students: Important Information

Mandatory Tutorials
The Center for Academic Excellence appreciates faculty support for its tutorial services, and the CAE encourages faculty to refer/recommend the CAE to students.

Experience has taught the CAE that mandatory tutorials tend to be counter-productive: students required to obtain tutorials often feel stigmatized, less engaged, and less willing and motivated to take ownership of their learning processes.

Student trust, confidentiality, and collaborative problem-solving are the foundation of tutoring. For these reasons, the CAE does not accommodate mandatory/required appointments.

Tutoring for Take-Home Examinations, Tests, and Quizzes
Instructors must indicate on writing—in the course syllabus, on the examination itself, or in an email to centerfolk@metrostate.edu that students are permitted to obtain tutoring specifically on these assignments. Tutoring appointments will be cancelled when written permission from the instructor is not on file in the Center.

Late, No-Show, and Canceled Appointments

Late policy: If you are more than 10 minutes late to a tutorial, the tutorial may be cancelled.

No-show policy: Please cancel your appointment in advance if you are unable to keep the tutorial appointment. You may cancel your appointment by logging into your account at  https://metrostate.mywconline.net, by emailing centerfolk@metrostate.edu, or by calling us at 651.793.1460, option 1.
