We are a community of writers. We proudly count among our ranks some founding officers of Metropolitan State's Guild of Art and Literature Advocates (GALA) and former editors of Haute Dish, the Guild's annual prose, poetry, and visual arts publication. A couple of us work for the Community Project in the Arts (COMPAS), the Minnesota program that places practicing artists in elementary and secondary classrooms all over the state. Several more are prize-winning poets and storytellers. All are committed to our primary goal: helping students at all levels achieve their writing goals.

We welcome inquiries about working with us. The Writing Center offers three employment categories for tutors.

Peer tutors are confident writers who want to share that confidence with others. Like other Metropolitan students, they often have substantial career and life experience. Peer tutors participate in 12 hours of interactive training and observe tutorials. The tutor training and experience can be folded into our internship, Application of Composition Theory, at both graduate and undergraduate levels.

Graduate tutors have undergraduate degrees from Metropolitan State or another college or university; some are volunteer Metropolitan alumni. These tutors contribute both the knowledge of other disciplines and their own considerable writing experience. Currently, we have tutors from nursing, cultural studies, and anthropology. Of course, writing, literature, and communications are represented, too. We'd love to have some from the business and technical disciplines.

Faculty tutors are community faculty members at Metropolitan State. Most of them teach writing classes, but some of them also teach ESL, literature, or language classes. Beyond tutoring, they train, mentor, and encourage graduate and peer tutors.

Support Staff: Without our friendly, kind, capable support staff, we couldn't, frankly, run the place. Our half-time administrative support person and several students make appointments, keep us in place and on time, maintain our equipment, supplies, and handouts, and record and report our efforts. Their expertise lies first in human relations: they remain calm at all times. Beyond that, their technical skills in document design and database management keep us afloat from day to day.
