Call for Concurrent Session Proposals
Spring Faculty Conference ● March 3, 2012
"Culturally Responsive Teaching- what does it mean at Metropolitan State University?"
When we walk into the classroom, each of us brings a complex array of cultural values, assumptions, and attitudes. In many ways, these align with the expectations of our students. Frequently, however, we note differences in expectations that are attributable cultural diversity among our students. Metro faculty are consistently challenged to recognize the ways in which cultural perspectives —our own and our students' -- play out in our classrooms.
Culturally Responsive Teaching goes beyond mere recognition of these differences, and leverages our students' cultural perspectives to enrich the learning environment for all.
Workshop Proposals are welcomed that address Culturally Responsive Teaching from the theoretical to the practical.
· How do we recognize the ways in which our own cultural backgrounds play out in our pedagogy?
· In what ways do our own cultural assumptions limit students' access to the ideas and skills we are teaching?
· How do we work, explicitly or implicitly, to introduce students to the culture of the disciplines we teach?
· How do we work to introduce students to the culture of higher education as a whole?
· How do we answer, and evaluate, "Question 8" on new course proposals (the question about including gender, diversity and global issues?
· How do we incorporate the cultural perspectives of our students into the classroom experience?
Faculty and staff are encouraged to submit proposals. Concurrent Sessions are 75 minutes long.
