Two Types of Article Databases

2. Subject Databases

  • Is your topic in a particular subject area?

If so, use a subject database. Subject databases specialize in a particular subject, and the articles indexed are generally from scholarly sources. Examples of subject databases and the kinds of articles they identify are:

Sociological Abstracts
Indexes the international literature in sociology and related disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences.
Women and Social Movements
Indexes articles about the history of women in social movements in the U.S. between 1600 and 2000.
Medline
Provides citations and abstracts for articles in medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care sytem, pre-clinical sciences, and more.
