Major job duties

  1. Greet students and other guests (remotely and in-person) in a professional manner; help with general office management, but not limited to filing, answering and directing phone communication, responding to emails, scheduling appointments, confirming room reservations, copying, faxing, postal mailing, creating purchase orders (via computer), research culturally relevant topics, using Zoom and other technology for meetings, help with retention initiatives, revising written communications, and other duties as assigned. Practice health and safety (adhere to MN Executive Orders, University policies and procedures, etc.) Contribute to the development of related programming for the Multicultural, American Indian and Retention Services Department (MAIR) Director, Student Success Coordinators and Dean of Students.

 

2.      Under the direction of the MAIR Director and Student Success Coordinators, assist with student intake (in person and virtually), develop and promote internal and external community resource connections for students, incorporate into referral resources and self-help library. Research topics specifically for culturally relevant and diverse communities. Help direct and guide duties of undergraduate work study students and volunteers as assigned by MAIR Director and Student Success Coordinators.

 

3.      Assist with planning, completing and promoting events for Multicultural,

American Indian and Retention Services department and its intended populations and communities.

 

Position Purpose: 

This position will assist the Multicultural, American Indian and Retention Services (MAIR) Department in Student Affairs/Student Success/Dean of Students in the development and execution of multicultural, diverse and culturally inclusive programming, retention initiatives and growth of connections with internal and community resources. The student will help support Multicultural, American Indian, Women’s and LGBTQ+ , Veterans and Military Connected students continuing their education and promoting respectful dialogues, brave spaces and a healthy learning environment. The position requires student to work within the Office mostly and/or remotely (may use virtual platforms such as Zoom, Skype for Business, Metro Teams, etc.) during both Fall semester 2021, and Spring semester 2022.

 

Problem Solving:

The undergraduate work-study position engages effectively with student situations in consultation with the MAIR Director and/or Coordinators. This position works with students to identify needs, access referrals and resources, and assess progress toward meeting stated and program goals.

Qualifications and experience

  • Must be a currently enrolled (Fall semester 2021) undergraduate or graduate student at Metropolitan State University and making satisfactory academic progress. Student must be enrolled and making satisfactory academic progress for each semester during term of employment. 
  • Must plan to enroll for Spring semester 2022 at Metropolitan State University.
  • Provide basic academic support services and information to students and their dependents and other community members such as alums and local community members. 
  • Excellent customer service skills (phone, in-person, public presentations, Zoom meetings, Teams, communication emails, newsletters, etc.)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Reliability, punctuality and responsibility.
  • Desire to motivate and assist students in attending to their academic progress, physical and emotional health.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Patience, empathy, supportive active listening skills.
  • Ability to research culturally relevant, diverse and inclusive topics.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Self-starter; demonstrated initiative and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability and interest in working in multicultural, ethnically diverse and culturally diverse environments.
  • Experience with providing services to historically underrepresented populations.
  • Proficient with computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Xcel, Publisher, and Zoom.

This position works with students and their families, Student Success/Student Affairs/ Dean of Students, staff, faculty and advisors, alums, and community social services and other providers.
