    $9.85 starting wage, then $9.95 after 1,000 hours worked at this level

Major job duties

  • The primary responsibility of the Classroom Assistant is to provide assistance to Upward Bound summer instructors.
    • Participate in planning meetings with the classroom instructor
    • Escort various groups of students to their assigned classrooms
    • Assist students, tutor small groups, supervise cooperative group activities or help with research under the direction of the classroom instructor and summer program staff
    • Provide instructor with assistance on activities that may include duplicating papers and tests, classroom set-up, or clerical tasks as agreed upon with the teacher and summer program staff
    • Share specific insights about students with the classroom instructor in order to assist in the evaluation of students
    • Assist in maintaining discipline in classroom, on campus, and other areas appropriate to the activity or learning situation
    • Facilitate student reflection on activities and presentation preparation
    • Attend staff meetings and summer events as requested by the Upward Bound professional staff
    • Monitor areas where students gather to ensure the safety of all students  Serve as a positive role model
    • Attend a one day orientation during the week of June 1. Exact date to be determined
    • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and experience

  • Applicant must have at least two years college experience (as a student).
  • Must possess strong leadership qualities and have the ability to function as a team player.

    • The ability to work effectively with students, staff and faculty at collegiate and high school levels
    • Must be sensitive, respectful and understanding of the needs of economically and academically disadvantaged, ethnically diverse high school students
    • Must be able to establish and maintain a trusting and productive working relationship with program students and staff Must possess the commitment, stamina and flexibility to participate constructively in potentially stressful personal interactions and situations
