Major job duties

Through this position, RA’s will enhance their leadership, organizational, problem-solving and communication skills in a safe, educational environment, while enhancing their ability to establish and maintain meaningful student relationships. Resident Advisors will lead students in enrichment activities with a social skill-building focus during a residential experience on one college campus. RA’s will:

  • Develop positive and supportive relationships with Upward Bound students, mentoring them on academic, personal, social, and college/career concerns
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining a positive and safe environment in the UB residence hall for students and staff (this position is a live-in position which includes training days and room and board is included)
  • Create an atmosphere that appreciates the diverse cultures, traditions, lifestyles, and beliefs of all students  Take primary responsibility for students in his/her group, by monitoring personal and social progress and updating other staff as necessary
  • Develop (create), lead (implement) and participate in free-time and structured evening activities that are engaging and age appropriate
  • Maintain appropriate, professional boundaries with students—safety being your primary concern
  • Monitor areas where students gather to ensure the safety of all students
  • Serve as a positive role model
  • Attend staff meetings and summer events as requested by the Upward Bound professional staff
  • Maintain student confidentiality as appropriate
  • Perform other tasks as reasonably assigned by the Upward Bound professional staff  Other duties as assigned

Note:  The trip destination is not determined yet. Residential Advisors will need to be available for this overnight trip from July 23-31, as well as prior training days which are to be determined.

Applicant must possess strong leadership qualities and have the ability to function as a team player. Also important:

  • Must be able to communicate constructively and effectively
  • Must be sensitive, respectful, and understanding of the needs of economically and academically disadvantaged and ethnically diverse high school students
  • Must be able to establish and maintain a trusting and productive working relationship with program students and staff
  • Must possess the commitment, stamina, and flexibility to participate constructively in potentially stressful personal interactions and situations Priority given to those who have had residential advisor experience
