This course will address the immediate and long term care of clients across the life span experiencing acute and chronic health concerns that often result in urinary or fecal incontinence. Specifically, students will gain knowledge of the etiology, differential diagnoses, clinical findings and nursing, medical and surgical management options for urinary and fecal incontinence. Emphasis will also be places on the psychosocial and educational needs of these client groups including behavioral strategies, environmental modifications, physical assessment and examination, containment, skin protection, pharmacological interventions and relevant procedures.

Learning outcomes

General

  • Identify risk factors (social, cultural, familial, occupational, medical and lifestyle) that place the client at heightened risk of developing bowel or bladder dysfunction, specifically incontinence.
  • For each type of bowel or urinary incontinence, identify potential etiology and distinctive manifestations, physical findings, and appropriate evidence based interventions.
  • Interpret data collected from sources such as physical assessment, laboratory tests, radiology, patient history and physical examination that are associated with urinary or bowel incontinence.
  • Analyze short and long-term needs related to health maintenance and prevention of complications for the client across the life span experiencing urinary or bowel incontinence.
  • Collaborate with patient and family and members of the health care team to gather data, participate in establishing a plan of care, communicate updates, and to order and evaluate necessary diagnostic studies to address common conditions involving the patient with incontinence.
  • Evaluate, diagnose and manage patient's response to plan of care including real or potential common complications associated with incontinence in the client across the life span.
  • Demonstrate certified Continence Care Nurse behaviors at a beginning level.
  • Demonstrate ability to develop individualized care plans that are evidence based and focused yet, holistic and outcome oriented, and address health promotion and disease prevention principles for the continence client across the life span.
  • Collaborate with patient and family and members of the health care team to gather data, participate in establishing the plan of care, communicate updates, and to order and evaluate necessary diagnostic studies to address common conditions involving the patient with incontinence.
