SCED 450 : Science Methods for Urban Grades 5-12 Classrooms and Lab

Prerequisites: EDU 300 Assessment of Learning and Teaching in Urban Grades 5-12 AND
EDU 306 Urban Middle School and High School Methods and at least 28 credits of science courses in the Life Sciences Teaching major.

This course prepares students to become effective science teachers in urban middle and high schools. It examines learning methods, content standards, and concept development. Participants develop skills at lesson and unit planning, delivering instruction, leading inquiry activities, and assessing learning in all areas of secondary science. It is intended for students pursuing middle school or high school science licensure. It should be taken shortly before student teaching.

  1. Demonstrate the use of effective high school instructional strategies including the use of presentations, investigations and electronic technologies.
  2. Plan and manage instruction and assessment for the development of science knowledge and skills, based on student needs and curriculum goals.
  3. Understand science learning processes in students and demonstrate strategies to improve learning and thinking skills in urban high schools.
  4. science education standards including national science standards, Minn. Graduation Standards, local standards and other current developments in science education.
