From faculty to higher ed administration: a Taiwanese mathematician's journey

Can I become an administrator, and should I? If I am interested, how do I become one? Are there additional challenges or obstacles for faculty of color to become administrators? Ben Weng, a former Metro State math faculty, will delve into these questions in this presentation. By sharing his personal journey, Weng will offer insights and perspectives on navigating the path to administration while addressing the unique challenges and opportunities faced by faculty of color. Join us in a conversation on the pathways towards leadership and administrative roles in higher education.

Bio: Born and raised in Taiwan, Ben Weng came to the United States to pursue higher education at the University of Minnesota. Following the completion of his graduate work, he spent three years teaching at a liberal arts college in New Jersey. In 2008, Weng joined the mathematics department at Metro State, where he was tenured and served as department chair from 2015 to 2018. In 2018, Weng transitioned into an administrative role as the STEM Dean at Minneapolis College. Through his career, Weng strives to bridge the educational equity gap and expand access to quality education for all.
