Moved by Providence

Metropolitan State University presents the student-written play “Moved by Providence”, about a privileged white student who is rethinking race and entitlement as she prepares to leave the city for the suburbs.

“Moved by Providence”, by Marcia McMullen, is a winner of Metropolitan State’s 2020 Playwriting Contest and was further developed in workshop as turmoil in Minneapolis continued to inform and change the play.

Set in modern-day Minneapolis, the play’s main character, Libby, is reluctantly leaving Minneapolis to live with her new partner in the western suburbs, but her shaman, Zelda, a black business owner on Lake Street needs help. Libby feels the move is providential, but Zelda challenges her. Both seek truth, enlightenment, and financial independence with different results. Whose side is Providence on? And is Providence truly divine?

Admission is free. No tickets or reservations necessary. Audiences are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the food shelf.

“Moved by Providence” is produced by Metropolitan State University’s Theater Program, the Minneapolis College Theater Department, and Metro Student Life’s Theater Underground. Gail Smogard, professor of fine arts, directs.

Face coverings are required for audience members, physical distancing between groups is encouraged. Performers will not wear face coverings, but are vaccinated and will implement physical distancing from the audience. There will be no intermission.
