Do you love to write? Do you follow current events? Do you ask a lot of questions? If yes, then join The Metropolitan for New Writer Orientation and join the newspaper's writing team as a reporter or an opinion writer. This two-hour training will get you started on writing your first news article or opinion piece. Training topics include:

  • qualities of (and differences between) news writing and opinion writing
  • generating story ideas
  • covering a beat and developing sources
  • interview skills
  • basic story structure
  • newspaper policies and procedures (including hiring paperwork to submit to Student Life and Leadership Development)

The Metropolitan welcomes writers of all majors. Current Metropolitan State University students are eligible to be paid $50 per published article. No experience is necessary and journalism training is provided. Reporters cover campus news and events, and must commit to writing one article per month. Opinion writers may write less often, and share their viewpoints on local/state/national/world issues that impact the Metropolitan State community.

This will be the final orientation session for spring semester. For more information, check out the newspaper's Engage page. Want to write but can't attend the training? The newspaper welcomes new writers on a rolling basis. Email The Metropolitan to find out how you can contribute to your student newspaper.
