Mayor Chris Coleman on April 7, 2016 announced that Assistant Chief Kathy Wuorinen will be appointed interim Chief of Police when Chief Tom Smith retires later this spring, while a permanent replacement is sought. Wuorinen currently serves as assistant chief of support services and administration for the Saint Paul Police Department.
The appointment makes Wuorinen the first woman to lead the Saint Paul Police Department.
Wuorinen is a 2004 Metropolitan State University Outstanding Student. She graduated with a bachelor of science in law enforcement.
