A Golden Valley resident from Tibet has been selected as a fall semester Outstanding Student at Metropolitan State University.

Kunchok Sangpo, who graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree, was chosen outstanding graduate student in the university’s College of Management Accounting program. He was one of 1,368 students receiving bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Metropolitan State’s 101st commencement exercises on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017 in Minneapolis.

“In the journey of my life I have worked so hard to reach at the position where I am today. I have always kept my aspiration high and never backed out from learning more. Educating myself with new knowledge was my passion beside my hobbies of outdoors,” Sangpo says.

Sangpo is originally from Tibet. Before transferring to Metropolitan State, Sangpo graduated from Delhi University, in India, with a bachelor’s degree in commerce. He is the first member of his family to go to college. “I am very grateful to Metropolitan State University for accepting my application and transferring many credits from Delhi University,” he says.

Sangpo is also an active member of Regional Tibetan Youth Congress in Minnesota, serving as a board member and the general secretary. In Delhi, Sangpo was president of the Tibetan Student Council and volunteered as a coordinator for Students for Free Tibet.

Currently working as an accountant at Visual Impact LLC, Sangpo plans to complete the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification after graduation. “At this stage I think I have built a solid foundation of my profession with the help of school’s learning and organizations and workplace experiences. Since learning never ends, I am looking forward to earning the certified public accountant license. Preparing for CPA exams will be my first step after school.”
