Science Education Center open for spring semester

Metropolitan State’s new Science Education Center (SEC) is now open on Saint Paul Campus. The facility includes 6,000 square feet of classroom space and 19,500 square feet of lab space, greatly expanding Metro State’s capacity to provide extraordinary science education.

“We’ve gone from having very few science facilities to having top-notch technology in a very short period of time,” says Ramin Daghigh, associate professor and department chair, Natural Science. “This will help us attract faculty as well as students.”

The SEC houses research labs for each department, allowing undergraduate students pursuing science degrees to gain valuable research experience. The first floor provides classrooms and labs for physics, earth and environmental sciences. Biology facilities are on the second floor, and the third floor is home to chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology.

According to Daghigh, the science faculty played a key role in planning the SEC. “The architects were very good at communicating and asking what our needs are,” says Daghigh. “Every detail is a footprint of a faculty member.”

Classes start at the SEC at the beginning of spring semester. It is located at the corner of East Sixth Street and Mounds Boulevard on Saint Paul Campus and can be reached by skyway from the first floor of Founders Hall.  A formal grand opening is planned in April 2016.
