Note: This course is a special section for Nagasaki exchange students and Metro students engaging in fieldwork research June 4-8. Students in this course will evaluate the presence of various elements in soil and sediment, using a field-portable X-ray fluorescence. Our first project will focus on identification of desirable elements and heavy metal contaminants in urban soils. We will work with a local non-profit organization that is considering use of these soils for urban farms. Our second project will evaluate the chemistry of lake sediment as well as movement of sediment. Instructor's permission required.
