Built in 2004, the Library and Learning Center houses the Metropolitan State Library, the Saint Paul Public Library Dayton's Bluff branch, the University Bookstore, the Gordon Parks Gallery, the Center for Faculty Development and the Center for Academic Excellence.

Metropolitan State's library occupies two floors. The first floor Information Commons has computers, scanners and printers for use by faculty, students, staff, alumni and community members. They are available on a first come first served basis. Also on the first floor is the Reference and Research Assistance desk, the Computer Help desk, study rooms, an electronic classroom often used by Information Studies courses, and a student lounge and event space.

The Metropolitan State University library's second floor houses most of the library's physical collections of books, DVDs, and curricular materials. There are also carrels with computers for student use. At the far end of the second floor is a large quiet study area. The second floor also houses the Center for Faculty Development space and the University Archives.

Both floors have private study rooms which may be checked out.

There are lounges with fireplaces on both floors. The upstairs lounge is a reading room with current magazines and newspapers, and the downstairs lounge has large tables and TV monitors for playing video games. The downstairs lounge can also be reserved for various functions.


The David Barton Community Labyrinth and Reflective Garden graces the lawn on the east side of the Library and Learning Center.
