Metropolitan State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). The Higher Learning Commission is one of six regional institutional accreditors in the United States and certifies degree-granting post-secondary educational institutions in the North Central region. The United States Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation recognize the Commission as the assigned regional accrediting organization. The pathway followed for accreditation is the Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP). The AQIP Pathway is focused on quality assurance and institutional improvement, with an added emphasis on helping institutions achieve continuous quality improvement. Metropolitan State University elected to join AQIP in 2003. Reaffirmation of Accreditation is based on Metropolitan State's active participation in AQIP, on evidence of improvement in the organization, and evidence that the University continues to fulfill the Commission's Criteria for Accreditation. The Criteria for Accreditation are the standards of quality by which the Commission determines whether an institution merits reaffirmation of accreditation.
