EDU 688 Research Methods in Urban/Cross-Cultural Education

The course engages students in the variety of educational research designs, analyses and conceptual frameworks appropriate for research in diverse and urban educational settings. The course examines approaches to research for improving classroom or school practices and/or connections with diverse urban or cross-cultural communities. Research methods learned include responsible conduct of research and human subjects protections, quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods along with issues of sampling, measurement, and technical adequacy of observed research results in urban educational settings.

Co-requisite: EDU 670. Note: Students are expected to be close to finishing their master's degree plan and have completed at least 18 credits of graduate study approved for the degree before taking this class.

Learning outcomes

General

  • Understand various types of and approaches to research scholarship for practitioners in schools and communities including action research and the role and differences among qualitative and quantitative research as well as the integration of mixed methods research approaches
  • Learn methods for research sampling and concepts of measurement
  • Describe and make decisions on data analysis using methods of technical adequacy; reliability and validity
  • Review and discuss the problems and threats to validity of research for improving educational outcomes for students and communities historically underserved or marginalized in education settings
  • Learn methods for critical review and testing of program and teaching strategies or programs
  • Review and critically analyze existing educational and social science research
  • Learn and practice developing research questions appropriate for conducting educational research
  • Practice critical review of research results
  • Determine a research project based on developing a research question
  • Complete training in the responsible conduct of research and protection of human subjects in educational research
