CRIM 502 Advanced Ethical Policing

This course is to prepare future ethical leaders for a career within the law enforcement profession, with a focus in the best practices within peace leadership, the dynamics of leadership, morality and professional conduct, ethical decision making, communication, motivation, and community policing.

Note: Formerly known as LAWE 502. Prerequisite: CJS 101: Introduction to Criminal Justice, or instructor permission. Note: Must be a School of Criminology and Criminal Justice student, or instructor permission.

Learning outcomes

General

  • Assess situations from several moral points of view and ethical systems.
  • Analyze and critically assess from a moral perspective: professionalism, codes of ethics, police authority, use of force, discretion, and corruption.
  • Apply the concept of social contract to police responsibility and accountability.
  • Evaluate and apply critical issues associated to diversity: Culture and subcultures, gender, age, working with the mentally ill, ethnicity, and other areas of possible discrimination or perceptions.
  • Understand the concepts and ethical implications of management and supervision within a law enforcement agency; including leadership concepts, motivation, teamwork, and mentoring.
