NURS 6703 Nursing Leadership Practicum I
This practicum focuses on the development of the nurse leader/manager through the application of nursing and leadership/management theory and research in improving the delivery and/or outcomes of health care. A project topic is identified, analyzed, and a plan for change or improvements developed. Learning needs are identified and personal objectives are negotiated with a mentor, emphasizing preparation for advanced leadership and management responsibilities.
This practicum experience includes a minimum of 200 hours at an approved clinical site.
Competence Statement: Knows principles of leadership, management, nursing, and other health disciplines well enough to evaluate health care systems and to propose an organizational or clinical improvement project in an identified setting.

- Analyze one's own leadership/management style relative to the practicum environment and expectations.
- Articulate the role of the nurse leader/manager in influencing the effectiveness of a health care organization.
- Utilize an assessment model to identify organizational needs, assets, resources, and opportunities.
- Collaborate with systems managers to expand knowledge of interprofessional roles in the advancement of organizational goals.
- Identify and propose an organizational or clinical improvement project which aligns with the organization¿s priorities.
- Translate and integrate best available evidence and theories to develop a plan for an organizational or clinical project in a selected setting or with a defined population.
- Examine the influence of political, economic, social, and ethical issues on managerial decision making and health care policies.
