Think Safe Be Safe 2026: a free cybersecurity education event for the community

Cybercrime doesn't just target large corporations. From fraudulent text messages and social media scams to identity theft and compromised personal accounts, digital threats can affect anyone. This October, Metro State University is helping Twin Cities residents take control of their online safety through Think Safe Be Safe 2026, a free cybersecurity education event designed for the community.

The event will take place Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Metro State's New Main Building, Room L206, located at 403 Maria Avenue in Saint Paul.

Hosted by the university's Cybersecurity Forensic Student Organization (CFSO) and Cyber Clinic, the event coincides with National Cybersecurity Awareness Month and focuses on a simple but important message: cybersecurity is everyone's responsibility.

Making cybersecurity practical for everyday life

As more daily activities move online, protecting personal information has become an essential life skill. Yet cybersecurity advice can often feel overly technical or difficult to apply.

Think Safe Be Safe 2026 seeks to close that gap by bringing accessible, real-world cybersecurity education directly to the community. The event will focus on three key areas:

  • Internet and social media safety: Recognizing scams, identifying suspicious online activity, and making safer choices when browsing or using social media.
  • Privacy and identity theft prevention: Understanding how personal information can be exposed, taking steps to reduce risks, and responding when an identity is compromised.
  • Home wi-fi and mobile device Protection: Learning practical ways to secure wireless networks, smartphones, and connected devices to protect personal and family information.

The event is designed for people of all backgrounds and technical skill levels, including students, parents, families, older adults, and community members who want to become more confident navigating the digital world.

Connecting university expertise with community needs

Beyond raising awareness, Think Safe Be Safe 2026 reflects Metro State University's commitment to community engagement and applied cybersecurity education. By connecting the university's cybersecurity students and Cyber Clinic with local residents, the initiative helps bridge the gap between academic knowledge and everyday digital security challenges.

The event also underscores the importance of prevention. Understanding how to recognize a fraudulent message, protect an online account, or secure a home network can make a meaningful difference before a cyber incident occurs.
