Metro State University hosted the Third Annual Military Cyber Symposium on Saturday, September 19, bringing together leaders and practitioners from the military, government, academia, and the cybersecurity community to strengthen collaboration and advance Minnesota’s collective cyber defense.
Held in partnership with the Minnesota National Guard C3, the symposium convened representatives from organizations including the FBI Minneapolis Field Office, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the Association of Minnesota Counties, Minnesota IT Services, and other members of Minnesota’s cybersecurity ecosystem.
The event focused on some of the most pressing challenges facing public-sector and national-security organizations. Discussions addressed Minnesota’s Cyber Task Force and Cyber Response Team, incident response, cross-agency coordination, electronic warfare, the evolving cyber threat landscape, and strategies for preparing the next generation of cybersecurity professionals.
A central theme throughout the symposium was the importance of collaboration across organizational and sector boundaries. Participants explored how government agencies, military organizations, higher education, and industry can combine expertise, resources, and capabilities to strengthen cyber preparedness and resilience across Minnesota.
Metro State students also played a prominent role in the program. Students from the university’s Master of Science in Cyber Operations program presented research and emerging technology solutions addressing cybersecurity challenges affecting the defense industrial base. Their presentations demonstrated how graduate education, applied research, and workforce development can contribute directly to real-world national security needs.
The symposium also highlighted the longstanding partnership between Metro State University and the Minnesota National Guard. Through cybersecurity education, training, applied research, workforce development, cyber-range activities, and other collaborative initiatives, the two organizations have continued to expand opportunities for students while supporting Minnesota’s broader cyber readiness.
The annual symposium reflects Metro State’s growing role as both an academic institution and a community cybersecurity partner. By bringing together students, faculty expertise, government partners, military personnel, and cybersecurity professionals, the university is helping connect education and innovation with the operational needs of organizations protecting Minnesota’s communities and critical systems.
