Learning outcomes
General
- Learn the fundamentals of the first and second language acquisition processes and their similarities and differences.
- Understand the processes of first and second language acquisition.
- Compare the similarities and differences between child, adolescent, and adult language acquisition.
- Demonstrate an understanding of communication instruction in a second language context.
- Implement strategies that develop communication skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing across the curriculum in grades K-12.
- Investigate the differences between literacy development in the first language and the second language, and the implications for teaching English language learners.
- Learn how to develop communication skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing as an important contributor to academic success across the curriculum.
- Demonstrate the use of communication techniques and the ability to use verbal, nonverbal, and multimedia and other technology based resources that enhance student learning; and understand how cultural, linguistic, ethnic, regional, and gender differences affect communication in the classroom.
